A week ago a friend of mine asked me “What type of grass would you recommend I install in my front/back yard- Bermuda or St. Augustine?” I thought for a minute and answered “Easy, Xeriscaping”
Xeriscaping- is the process of landscaping or gardening that reduces or eliminates the need for supplemental water from irrigation. It is promoted in regions that do not have accessible, plentiful, or reliable supplies of fresh water and is gaining acceptance in other regions as access to irrigation water is becoming limited. My friend living in the RGV, is a region known for its extreme heat during the summer months. The first option that would come to mind would be artificial grass yet it would be an unfair comparison with natural turf, since artificial grass costs between $25-30 S/F while natural grass would go for $3-4 S/F. However in the long run, one should also consider these factors- water consumption, during extreme winters or extreme summers natural grass tends to burn and this would require vitamins, land soil even some fertilizing but probably the most important item would be maintenance costs. How much would it cost to keep grass trimmed and healthy? How many times per month will you have someone taking care of your yard? If its once a month multiply it by 12- Now, it doesn’t necessarily needs to be artificial grass since, with this type of landscape you are free to create anything your imagination allows. Basic Elements of a Xeriscape yard: Drought tolerant plants- using natives or plants that are indigenous to your area is best. Reduction or replacement of lawns; Efficient irrigation; Natural materials like Flagstone, Gravel, stone, boulders- alternatives are limitless while this not only will translate into a more inviting and visually striking feel to your garden it will considerably reduce the cost of maintenance while contributing to a more sustainable approach.
Just because there is no grass it doesn’t mean the results cant be satisfying
This landscape alternative- can have a great impact on your exterior- not only reduces water consumption but it also reduces the costs of maintenance.
Some users of Xeriscaping have discovered that its simplicity has brought them serenity and peace of mind.
